Why This Site Exists
Printed Chattanooga directories are historical collections now, yet the underlying records remain with different custodians. Property material is held by the Hamilton County Assessor and Register of Deeds. Chattanooga Public Library’s Local History & Genealogy Department keeps directories from 1871 through 2008, while city and state offices control their own public records. This reference identifies the search routes, contacts, date ranges, and access limits that apply in Chattanooga.
What This Reference Includes
- Pages by question: the street directory for address-keyed material, the city directory for historical volumes, and the resident lookup for a one-person research task
- Custodians and collections: the Assessor, Register, election office, court clerk, vital-records routes, and Library Local History
- Practical methods: address trails, directory-entry reading, and household research across dated sources
- Access limits: Tennessee disclosure rules, record-specific restrictions, and routes for a request when a record is not online
